Getting Your Home Ready for the Holidays: A Little Creativity, Inspiration, and Planning Ahead
Halloween is over and that’s our clue that the holidays are just around the corner! This wonderful time of the year gets us thinking about special gatherings with our family and friends, decorating the house and planning special menus.
Holiday decorating doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most creative and just a few special touches can completely change how a room looks and feels.
Over the years, I save posts of decorating ideas that I found interesting, easy to accomplish or they just caught my eye. Some are clever, some are whimsical, and others are just plain fun! I thought this would be the perfect time to share a few of my favorites.
But first, let’s talk about getting your home ready for the holidays.
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
If you’re hosting family or friends this year, take a fresh look at the spaces where everyone will gather.
Your entryway, kitchen, dining room, and living room are probably going to see the most activity. Fortunately, you don’t need a major renovation to make these spaces feel welcoming.
Here are a few simple things you can do:
- Rethink your furniture arrangement. Make sure guests can move comfortably through the room and that seating encourages conversation.
- Pay attention to lighting. Table lamps, dimmers, and warm accent lighting can make a room feel cozy and inviting.
- Clear the clutter. A little organization goes a long way, especially in kitchens and entertaining spaces.
- Refresh your accessories. New pillows, throws, candles, or seasonal greenery can change the look of a room without a significant investment.
- Use what you already have. Sometimes rearranging accessories or repurposing everyday items creates the most interesting results.
And speaking of using what you already have, here are some holiday ideas I’ve saved over the years that I thought were worth sharing!
A Little Holiday Inspiration From My Collection
I’m always coming across interesting design ideas, whether I’m researching products for clients, browsing design resources, or simply scrolling through Facebook.
Some ideas are too clever not to save! Here are a few that made me smile.
Welcome Guests With a Little Holiday Whimsy

I absolutely love this idea!
Someone took two ordinary evergreen trees and transformed them into oversized Christmas gnomes with red hats, flowing white beards, and adorable little noses.
What a creative way to use existing landscaping as part of your holiday decorations!
It’s a wonderful reminder that you don’t always have to purchase something new. Sometimes all it takes is looking at what you already have with a little imagination.

Creative Christmas Decorations With a Personal Touch

I love finding creative uses for everyday items, and these Christmas decorations are perfect examples.
From festive wreaths and decorative picture frames to charming arrangements of ornaments and greenery, these ideas show how ordinary materials can become something special.
What catches my designer’s eye is the repetition of color and texture. Even though the decorations are different, the consistent use of red, green, and white creates a coordinated holiday look.
And you don’t have to be an experienced crafter to appreciate a clever idea!

A Snowman at Every Place Setting

Who says holiday entertaining has to be formal?
This adorable snowman table setting is one of those ideas that makes you wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself!
Using simple white dinnerware, red napkins, and a few creative accents, an ordinary place setting becomes a cheerful snowman.
It’s a fun way to dress up your holiday table without investing in an entirely new set of seasonal dishes.
I especially like ideas that make guests smile before they’ve even sat down to dinner.
A Christmas Tree That’s Good Enough to Eat!

Holiday entertaining is about more than decorating. Presentation can make even the simplest foods feel special.
I came across this festive Christmas tree appetizer from Pillsbury and thought it was such a clever idea.
Golden crescent rolls arranged into the shape of a Christmas tree create a fun and inviting addition to a holiday buffet.
It’s a perfect example of how a little creativity can turn something ordinary into a memorable presentation.

One More Clever Idea Worth Sharing

I couldn’t resist including this video from First Media Blossom.
One of the things I enjoy most about collecting these ideas is discovering how creative people can be with simple materials and a little imagination.
Sometimes the best holiday inspiration comes from seeing someone approach an everyday item in a completely unexpected way.

What If Your Home Needs More Than a Holiday Refresh?
Of course, while you’re preparing for the holidays, you may find yourself looking around your home and thinking about bigger changes.
Maybe your kitchen isn’t functioning as well as you’d like when you’re preparing meals for a crowd. Perhaps your dining room feels cramped, your bathroom needs updating, or your living room simply doesn’t accommodate the way your family gathers.
And maybe you’re wondering if there’s still time to get that remodeling project finished before Christmas.
The reality is that most major remodeling projects aren’t likely to be completed before the holidays if you’re just getting started now.
A successful kitchen or bathroom remodel involves much more than selecting cabinets, countertops, or tile. There’s space planning, design development, material selections, ordering, scheduling contractors, and construction.
Trying to rush through those decisions to meet a holiday deadline can create unnecessary stress and costly mistakes.
But here’s the good news: This is actually a wonderful time to start planning!
Let Your Holiday Gatherings Inspire Your Next Project
One of the best ways to evaluate how well your home functions is to pay attention to what happens when you’re entertaining.
Does everyone gather in the kitchen, even though there isn’t enough room?
Is there a better way to arrange your living room furniture to accommodate conversation?
Would additional storage, improved lighting, or a more functional floor plan make everyday life easier?
These are exactly the kinds of things I encourage homeowners to think about before beginning a remodeling project.
Taking the time to plan now allows you to explore design possibilities, establish a realistic budget, and make thoughtful decisions before construction begins.
And when the holiday decorations come down, you’ll already have a head start on creating the home you’ve been envisioning.
Enjoy the Holidays and Make Plans for the New Year
Your home doesn’t have to be perfect to be welcoming.
The holidays are about spending time with the people who matter most, sharing traditions, and creating memories. Sometimes a simple centerpiece, a clever decorating idea, or a thoughtfully arranged room is all it takes to make the season feel special.
I hope a few of the ideas I’ve collected inspire you to try something different this year.
And if a kitchen remodel, bathroom renovation, or interior transformation is on your wish list for 2027, I’d love to help you start planning.
At Interior Transformation, thoughtful design is about more than creating beautiful spaces. It’s about making your home work better for the way you live.
